'Simplicite' Simplicity Sandwiches @ D'Alamanda, Pudu Ulu, Cheras

Making sandwiches might seem like a simple task, but the most satisfying ones are prepared with lots of heart & skilfulness; this modest bakery cafe - run by buddies Hong & Eric - does an admirable job in bringing customers bread they can believe in.

Hong is only 23, but he knows his way around an oven, having spent months working & learning at Sentul's Tommy Le Baker. With Tommy's blessings, Hong & Eric recently opened their own place at the D'Alamanda condo in Cheras, offering carefully crafted sandwiches & pastries at very fair prices in a warm venue where customers will feel instantly welcomed like old friends.

Possible choices here include baguettes filled with chicken meat, sourdough slices topped with rib-eye steak & white bread stuffed with egg & tomatoes, each served nice & warm, with unmistakably fresh flavours. Our favourite is the crusty baguette (RM8.50 for the portion above), which provides a pleasant bite & an easy chew.

Bite down on bran toast, accompanied by a choice of butter, jam or better still, Simplicity's kaya, thick - with a reassuringly home-made sort of texture - & subtle-flavoured. RM4.50; a breakfast like this would make for a lovely beginning to the day.

Simplicity's other French-inspired offerings include croissants & lemon tarts, suitable for eating here or taking back home.

The ideal day to visit Simplicity? Friday - that's when you'll find Kai of coffee subscription specialists Blaq Coffee - & perhaps his wife Margaret too - spending the day here serving pour-over coffee to pair with your sandwiches.

It's a convenient way to sample the beans - from local roasters like Sprezzatura & Seraph Awaken - that Blaq mails out to subscribers every month. Lively, harmoniously vibrant notes in these glasses of coffee - & speaking of harmonious notes, Kai often brings his guitar to Simplicity, so ask him to strum you a song after he's done with the brewing.
